We are used to power failure here, although for not four days at a time. Usually a few hours at a time because the main national power generators can't satisfy the load.
I have two small generators for the fridges which, together, use about a gallon of petrol a day. Also two battery-driven inverters which are charged by the mains supply, when it's there, and can last for a few days. They are useful to run mobile phones and WI-FI. Also, fortunately, the stove runs on centrally supplied gas. Otherwise one has to buy cylinders of LPG.
Many people are now installing solar which require a roof-full of panels. They don't run fridges and certainly not electrical stoves. These are also now a big attraction for thieves.
In summer, power failure is not too bad but it's a real bitch in winter when one needs heaters and can't burn gas or wood etc, especially in one's bedroom at night. This will be a prime problem in Canada, as you know,
Yes, and as you say, everything runs on electricity. And this is a big reason for the economic failure of South Africa since the take-over of the ANC government because they have failed to develop the necessary infrastructure and, instead, have stolen the money. In turn this has driven many people from the country, especially those who can afford to leave. In turn, this has aggravated the economic problems. And, in turn, this has been a contributing reason for the government's failure to develop the necessary electricity supply.
And, just like the US, UK and EU, another major problem is the place is swarming with undocumented, illegal immigrants from the whole of Africa who have swamped whatever infrastructure existed. And I'm not talking about the tidal wave of crime.
That's another WHOLE story and is the reason why I have to have a guard at my house at night. Unbelievable.
As I tell my wife - what's going on here is nothing short of war. |
