>> BYD was a very unusual investment for Berkshire to start with. It was largely a shot in the dark.

Munger pushed hard for the deal after meeting BYD's founder and CEO, Wang Chuanfu—a self-taught engineer who built the company from a battery startup into a powerhouse. At Berkshire's 2008 annual meeting, Buffett credited Munger, saying, "If Charlie had not been there, we would not have done it. I would've killed the deal." The deal wouldn't have been made but for Munger, according to Buffett.

And they did make a lot of money at the end of the day (7B USD).

Reality is the industry may be going into very hard times. I will stay with Tesla for now because of the outlook for FSD (as I believe it will ultimately win the contest and it would be nuts to leave now -- although building legal attacks are bothersome). But clearly Tesla is in a good place WRT to robotaxi and utility-scale. I see nothing to stop China from taking a big chunk of that business with Tesla's technology which they have already surely compromised.

If there were one failure I think Musk should acknowledge and reverse it is the commitment against patent enforcement. I don't think you can re-invent utility-scale every three years, which means China can take the lead in the industry given time.
