My impression is that Russia would have settled for very little in the beginning, like an honest Minsk agreement.

Now I think they want every Ukrainian dead, or a least enough of them. Speed doesn't seem to matter, in fact slow is better.

As far as Putin's ego or Trumps and who is trying to impress whom.....that's the old game, saving face, peace with honor and all that kiss and make up stuff. I don't think Putin cares what Trump thinks (although I admit that I don't have any way of knowing what's in someone's head, unlike some other posters) as long as a lot of Ukrainians die.
