He wants 1:1 chip matching?

So chip companies keep old, inefficient fabs open to make chips at a loss to export so they can import higher valued chips without a tariff? What a waste of resources.

Maybe Trump will get an electron microscope and inspect each chip to balance the number of transistors imported and exported? Maybe a job for Comey and other "corrupt regulators" to do while in prison?

This proposed policy strikes me as a nightmare to track and enforce. The administration seems to believe that chips are like appliances.

I think he throws ideas off the top of his head on the wall like a monkey tosses its feces to see if any stick be it using something like bleach to kill COVID in the body to matching the number of chips with "firing Intel's CEO" along for the ride. It is actually not a bad form of brainstorming engineers used to do over pitchers of beer (or illegal stuff) in the 80s until many of us ended in rehab... The trouble is he does it in full view of reporters, MAGA supporters and the rest of the World rather than in private.

BTW, I think BOTH Biden and Trump are foolish to meddle in this with all sorts of different taxes and subsidies as if they are competing with the Chinese for government control of production!

They could get chip manufacturing back in the US if they exempted profits from chip making from taxes and we could slash the size of government to eliminate all the regulators keeping track of what they have to do now to qualify for this or that subsidy and tariff exemption. But, neither party wants to give up the control and money raising (or ass kissing in Trump's case) they have by using taxes (tariffs ARE taxes... ).
