David, Took me a while to get back here, We were discussing Covington and why.
You said: Part of this strategy is to migrate all PCs to the Slot 1 or higher design, thereby making the Slot 7 motherboards obsolete. This leapfrogs the Pentium, but in the process makes the K6 and Cyrix chip yesterday's doo doo
Yes this is true, But if the AMD K6 on a socket 7 is faster than covington, Then won't that be an attractive alternative for the Box Builders that want to offer a cheep machine ? After all, Socket 7 Monther Boards will only get cheeper.
You Said: Whereas, if you buy a P II Covington, and you have a few more bucks after getting hooked on your first PC, you can upgrade to a higher level chip with the same motherboard.
I read that the P II is not an upgradable device and INTC will not offer upgrades like with the Pentimun. That kills that theory unless I read wrong.
You said There may be other reasons as well for this strategy, such as agreements with MSFT etc. about architecture standards for the next operating system release
MSFT is working hard to make sure that their OS is cross platform campatable. AMD, CYRX, INTC, even the IDTI WinChip.
So Why is INTC so intent on selling a new design that will cost more and preform equal. Maybe they are just profit minded. After all, The consumer will buy anything.
