In his 1962 lecture Why We Remain Jews, Strauss rejected the idea that Isreal as a nation should be contained within its borders; “Israel must retain its specificity, which is to be everywhere.”
In his article Thoughts on Machiavelli, Strauss praised Machiavelli for “the intrepidity of his thought, the grandeur of his vision, and the graceful subtlety of his speech”.
Machiavelli’s model of a prince was Cesar Borgia, the tyrant who after having appointed the cruel Ramiro d’Orco to subdue the province of Romania, had him executed with utter cruelty, thus reaping the people’s gratitude after having diverted their hatred onto another.
Strauss wrote “Machiavelli is a patriot of a particular kind. He is more concerned with the salvation of his fatherland than the salvation of his soul. And that happens to be what Jewishness is all about.”
