I don't try to curve fit.
I think in terms of quantitative algorithms and I think about what is missing.
Then I test my idea against the original.

While the temptation is always there to try to curve fit the algo, I never do that. What I care about is whether or not the new indicator is marginally better and whether or not it is better due to some logic that makes sense rather than because I fine tuned the parameters.

Also, I don't use too many moving parts. I will not use some esoteric distance measure and use its square root and its ratio to some other esoteric metric then divide by blah blah... I aim to be as minimalist as possible.

Fine tuning parameters is the path to failure.
