Donald Trump’s TikTok Deal Looks Like Crony Capitalism

The sale demonstrates the President’s personal brand of industrial policy—transactional, opaque, and designed to politically benefit him and his allies.

.....Like other aspects of the proposed transaction, the details remain opaque. But the Wall Street Journal, citing a White House official as its source, reported that ByteDance will retain ownership of TikTok’s most valuable asset, its proprietary algorithm that curates what content appears in users’ “For You” feeds, and will license a copy of it to the new consortium, thus protecting its intellectual property and insuring itself a steady stream of fee income on top of the profits it receives as a minority owner. The new owners would train the licensed algorithm “on U.S. user data to wall it off from Chinese influence under the supervision of cloud-computing firm Oracle,” according to the Journal. This helps explain how ByteDance could end up getting half the profits, but it doesn’t clarify how updates to the algo from its Chinese designers will be dealt with, or whether the American version will be tweaked to favor conservative posts.

A new report from the Pew Research Center found that about a fifth of American adults regularly get news from TikTok. “If I could, I’d make it a hundred per cent MAGA-related,” Trump quipped at last week’s signing ceremony. “But it’s not going to work out that way, unfortunately.” Vance said the Administration wanted the business to make content decisions “based on the interest of the users.” But, if the proposed deal includes any legal guarantees to assure TikTok’s political neutrality, they haven’t yet been revealed....
