He's making a two-pronged argument -- that the US is heading in the direction of autocracy, and that autocracies are bad for economic development and investing. So even if one welcomes autocracy, one still has to contend with the fact that autocracies aren't great places to invest.

I get that people may disagree with the first of the two prongs, but do people dispute the economic viability argument? If not, maybe it makes sense to be foundationally sure that we are not headed in an autocratic direction, and understand what that would look like if we were.
