Jim -- I'm so glad you like to fish the web. Thanks for sharing! I leave early tomorrow for the Alex Brown Technology Conference in Baltimore and while I'm gone I have an assignment --- should you decide to accept it. I've recently been discussing Amati with someone from ADI and his comments seem excessively harsh. How would you have responded to his following words?
<<<I still don't see what Amati *has*. nor do I see what they will add. They have no financial backing (compared to Alcatel, NorTel etc). They have no manufacturing skills (USR), no data experience (Cisco), and no channels/marketing (USR, Ascend).
So what do they have ? Smart people (who've never had a succesful business - look at codex or Telebit. Dismal!) Algorithms - that everyone else has too. The chips it uses are going to be open market (moto will sell to everyone), unlike Orckit, Alcatel, Pairgain who have custom silicon.
So where is their sustainable competitive advantage ?Sure, they might get bought by someone, which would be easy route to a good return, but i can't see a long term future for them.>>>
I responded but I wish I'd have thought to remind him Cisco, Ascend, and US Robotics all started somewhere. They didn't appear on the scene the successes they are today.
Have at it, Jim and anyone else.
Thanks!
