Reporting from the White House
Addressing a crowd of several thousand sailors, veterans and family members at an event celebrating the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy, President Trump praised the strikes the United States military has carried out on boats it says were carrying drugs in the Caribbean, which his administration has characterized as an “armed conflict” with cartels.
He said the strikes were so successful that “there are no boats in the water anymore,” not even fishing vessels. He continued to suggest, without evidence, that those who have been killed were drug dealers responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans, making the strikes “actually an act of kindness.”
Experts have questioned whether the airstrikes, which were carried out without congressional authorization, are legal.
