Yes, sale for capital gain generates UBTI if units are in non-taxable account.
(I have read this. Hope my memory is correct. Should be confirmed though.)

I've not had enjoyable experiences with MLP's at tax time, so I'm willing to accept less income (MLP distribution yield) and less anxiety elsewhere. Others may have different experiences with their MLPs and tax preparations.
