Ukraine appears to be attacking the town of Staryi Oskil in the Bilhorod region. I was wondering why we didn't do it before.

This is a key iron ore processing and extraction site in russia, accounting for 50% of russian iron production, or roughly 40 million tons.

It consists of two GOKs (Mining and Processing Plants).

The extraction sites operate approximately twenty 300–750 ton quarry crawler excavators. These machines are incredibly slow and large, making them easy targets. The hydraulic systems of these machines are huge, and the hydraulic fluid is extremely flammable. If it catches fire, the entire machine is an unrecoverable loss.

Not only are these machines extremely expensive, but the bigger issue is that they are never readily available, and lead times are a year or more.

To summarize, if Ukraine successfully strikes these, the russian iron manufacturing industry will lose 50% of its output.
