They give Ph.d's in this stuff (Roman History, Greek History, European History, Egyptian history, Persian History, etc.) to those willing to study a bunch of old stuff that survived

My point is I think not much old stuff survived.

So they do give PHd's in studying Roman History, but there isn't much to study other than previous scholarship. Following the 'rule of telephone' the result is often garbage, I think.

The Vatican may have lots of stuff that I'm unaware of, but other than there where would all this old stuff be stored at the moment? Bill Gates' house?
