This is an example of the type of thing I'm calling myth rather than fact.

What's the evidence that the "entire city of Rome was mined for metal pins"? Do you believe that a city with no electricity, no newspaper, no indoor toilets and no medicine, etc etc was so organized that together the "entire city was mined for metal pins"? I don't.

Your archaeologist tells stories like these because it allows him to have a job, and he got taught stories like these in school because it allowed his professors to have a job.

I don't think we have much of a clue what was going on in Rome in 500AD.
