Britain ruled the oceans until technology killed their empire. The development of battleships from ships of the line over the span of less than a century drove them to the edge of bankruptcy. The British Empire always had the latest and greatest with the greatest numbers throughout the evolution from wood-hulled sailing ships with bronze, black powder muzzle-loading cannons with a crows nest to the steel-hulled, oil-fired turbines with large bore, smokeless powder rifles and radio and radar. And then promptly blew them up and got them sunk in the two world wars which pushed them over the edge.

That the empire descended into nepotism and crony capitalism didn't help matters much.
