Yes, for large institutions like financial ones. Usually if one comes close, some other entity comes to the rescue, government or private money.

In this case - hypothicated inventory at metals supply yards -, I'm note sure that the relatively short history shows much in the way of failures to deliver. So who knows what can happen, though we can expect prices to rocket as one failure suggests that others will follow.
