Interesting connections between AI and war in Ukraine is transformers.
- setting aside that the AI models are transformer models
- power generation bottleneck is closely tied to availability of transformers to collect and deliver power to the right place. Backlog is now apparently 3 years
- As a "test", in 2022, Russia attacked some power infrastructure in Ukraine, including blowing up some transformer stations
- Western countries rushed to the rescue and donated some of their spare transformers, and as a result, have no spare transformers to help power the AI boom
- Russia now has enough Geran drones to destroy every single transformer in the country, including small stations, sending the entire country to permanent darkness. There are no replacements coming.
