Modern societies are built on ether. Most of how they work is by fiat; like the rules of the road, they work simply because everyone agrees to follow those norms.

But you are dealing with a bunch of people who believe in "might is right". They don't see the rules and traditions as unbreakable. They see them as tools and suggestions.

They will make their mark regardless of what people who don't understand Americanistan think.

To use your example, it's not that Americans can't drive like your taxi driver did. Rather Americans like you are on the road with a bunch truckers who drive like your taxi did. So if you are not following them and using them as your shield, you'd better get the hell out of their way before they steamroll over you.

Meanwhile, you are standing on the side of the road thinking that the light is red and you can't cross and they think sure I I can, watch me. And worse, there are people who think they have the right of way and they are protected, but the only person who is really protected is Trump because the justice department won't ever prosecute him and he can pull all levers.

How many things has Trump done so far that you didn't think were possible? How many norms has he broken so far?

You are refusing to see the reality.

You should talk more with people from developing countries who have seen regime changes and ask them what they think is coming down the pipes.

Jon Stewart had an interview with this Maria Ressa. Years before they had had a conversation and Stewart had told her it can't happen here because we have a strong democratic tradition.

Now he has to eat those words.
