From JH … his point about iris effect even on small format is well taken. Might be why ambilight has 10 stages

“””Thanks . Despite the comments about there not being much of a difference between the different stages in terms of light transmission, his description of looking like "ink pouring in from the edges" clearly indicates an objectionable iris effect, even in a relatively small surface area window.

And the "significantly heavier" comment is never good (heavier is always bad in terms of practicality in handling, energy efficiency, and also when that weight comes in the roof, it tends to raise the center of gravity of the car, thereby reducing stability.)

In the past putting an electrochromic glass next to an SPD window has been one of our best "salespeople."

Subject: Corvette roof demo

Corvette roof demo at around 13 minutes comment below kind of sums it up.

So the electrochromic roof is heavier, takes a minute to darken, barely changes tint and costs $3,000. Looks like a gimmick. That’s a hard pass for me.
