Brazilian Gold Exploration
Phoenix, AZ (10/7) - Brazil's government-owned mining conglomerate, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce, signed two contracts with Phelps Dodge to explore
for gold in Brazil's northern state of Para. PD will invest $9.5 MM over the next 30 months to prospect in two areas in the Carajas region where CVRD has
found evidence of possible gold deposits. Discoveries will be shared 50/50.
CVRD plans to almost double its annual gold output by the year 2000 to 30 metric tons, up from 16.3 tons in 1995. This year it expects to produce 18.2
tons. Brazil's total gold output reached 21.988 tons in 1995, down from 30.347 tons in 1994, with CVRD accounting for most of the annual production.
A change in legislation opening Brazil's mining sector to foreign investment paved the way for the deal with PD. Another U.S. company, Gold Star-Southern
