Neither John Brennan nor James Comey are communists. Brennan voted for a Communist Party USA candidate in a presidential election during his youth, but has stated he was never a member of the party. Comey also identified as a communist for a short period during his younger years before his career in public service. Both have gone on to hold prominent national security and law enforcement positions in the U.S. government.
John Brennan
  • 1976 vote: While in college, Brennan cast a vote for Gus Hall, the Communist Party USA candidate for president, to show his dissatisfaction with the political system during the Watergate era.
  • CIA clearance: When he applied to the CIA in 1980, Brennan was open about his vote during a polygraph test and was still accepted. He has said he was never a member of the Communist Party.
  • Career: Brennan served for 25 years at the CIA before retiring in 2005. He returned to government as Homeland Security Advisor to President Barack Obama before being appointed CIA Director in 2013. He has since been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump.

James Comey
  • Early political views: In a 2003 interview with New York magazine, Comey admitted to being a communist in his early life. He said, "I'd moved from communist to whatever I am now".
  • Republican affiliation: Comey was a registered Republican for most of his adult life but left the party after Donald Trump's election.
  • Career: Comey held several prominent roles under President George W. Bush before being appointed FBI Director by President Barack Obama in 2013.

Why are their early affiliations a topic of discussion?
Their early affiliations are used by their political opponents to attack their credibility. For example, in 2018, then-Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis claimed Brennan was a member of the Communist Party, a statement PolitiFact rated as "Mostly False". Similarly, Donald Trump has shared clips referring to Comey's youthful claim of being a communist.
