Microsoft 365 Premium explained: price cuts, but more AI

The release of a new Microsoft 365 subscription plan is good news, although Microsoft is surprisingly reluctant to say that.

Whenever Microsoft announces changes in plans — especially “simplifying” pricing — it’s usually a sure sign of a price increase in disguise. Not this time. Microsoft has two surprises for old Microsoft watchers, such as your humble correspondent.

Surprise 1 – The new Microsoft 365 Premium plan brings a significant price decrease for anyone with a Copilot Pro plan. It’s not a trivial saving either, at between $140 and $170 a year.

Surprise 2 – Microsoft isn’t boasting about the price drop. In fact, the reduction is barely mentioned in all Redmond’s usual hype about Copilot and AI. I have some theories about why the company is downplaying the good news....
