Hi Dale,

To the best of my understanding drilling muds are composed of oils,polymers,lime,clays and other materials.Because there is an appreciable amount of lime present the mud has a high alkalinity.Perhaps what you are trying to say is that they are attempting to neutralize the mud.

Having said the above they can possibly after the neutralization stage employ a surfactant to separate the three phases liquid,water and solids.From this they can perhaps perform a mass balance to see if any new oil has appeared in the drill cuttings.Does the above fit what you are trying to say.
