In the 90's and 00's, my wife and I sponsored some kids to go to school in developing countries. Some we gave as holiday gifts, and others we did on our own.

I got notified today that one of those kids in Ethiopia searched for me on LinkedIn. This is a girl who was the only person in her family who was able to go to school as a child. She ended up graduating from university.
