A problem is that people often use "Nazi" and/or "fascist" when they just mean authoritarian. That certainly was the case on the Internet when Godwin formulated his eponymous law. But 40 years ago, no one outside of Toledo Ohio, which rather (in)famously had a nazi bookstore at least through the 1970s, would have espoused actual Nazi ideology. They grew up with "12 O'Clock High!" and all of those WWII movies on TV.

It is different now. We have people actually quoting Hitler, when they aren't advocating his policies, either directly or covertly. Even antisemitism is almost trendy, not to mention the anti-immigrant sentiments. You can almost literally take Nazi propaganda, translate it into English and find very similar statements by prominent politicians and influencers.

That should give people a lot more pause than it apparently does.

Like I point out, if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck and swims like a duck, perhaps you should entertain the possibility it isn't a whale.
