Tony - Re: " IA-64, code-named Merced and expected out in the first quarter of 1999."

Intel (or leaks from Intel) has given "guidance" that Merced samples should be shipped to key accounts by the end of this year - or early next year at the latest.

Clearly, a LOT OF HARDWARE and SOFTWARE development will need to be done to get the first systems ready for prime time.

I think that is why the second half of 1999 is Intel's guidance for their (Intel's) customers to ship PRODUCTION machines with Merced Technology.

I'm sure the testing, verification, debug, retesting... scenario is familiar to you. Intel is trying to allow for that in their "confusing" schedules.
