Samsung Electronics ( OTCPK:SSNLF) is set to unveil its first trifold smartphone on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, summit in South Korea this month, Bloomberg News reported.
It will be the company’s first device with two hinges, allowing it to work as either a conventional smartphone or a larger tablet when fully unfurled, and will be displayed at an exhibition of cutting-edge Korean technology, on the sidelines of the event, the report added, citing people with knowledge of the matter.
Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Seeking Alpha.
Alongside Huawei Technologies, Samsung has led the move to develop foldable phones. In September last year, Huawei launched its Z-shaped tri-fold phone Mate XT, and last month introduced an update to the phone.
Attendees at this month’s event likely would not be allowed to touch the new device, as it is expected to be displayed under glass. The full commercial launch of the trifold phone is expected to occur later this year, the report noted.
Samsung’s seventh-generation book-style foldable Galaxy Z Fold 7 was launched in July and has seen success with consumers due to its thinner and lighter design, the report added.
Apple ( AAPL) is expected to introduce its first folding iPhone next year.
