I'm not sure "flat out" is the way I'd describe it. He said it, but he contrasting the great heart of Kirk versus his own failing.. It does demand context. When he said it even got a laugh from the crowd honoring Kirk.
I heard this (probably the only thing I heard out of speech) but plainly understood it as, "Charlie was a better man than I am." Kirk did exude forgiveness, but was also about kind ways of educating people about turning hating moments into learning moments. I'm down with that, and that is kind of what Trump in that moment.
MAGA cultists, especially those who claim to be "Christian," love this shit because they can outsource the business of revenge upon Trump. In their mind, as long as Trump is willing to do the dirty work, they don't have to.
While I was raised Christian, and I certainly approve of Christian lives, I can't claim to live a Christian life in terms of worship and that sort of thing (the only times I've been in a church over the last 50 years, I think, would have been at funerals or weddings.)
The Left has for years, decades I guess, bitched about the Right and the religion that was part of the membership requirements. Of course, that was never true; the Right has, for the most part, only insisted on religious FREEDOM. I can't argue with that. But Trump doesn't, either. He just recognizes right and wrong and tries to sort that out as well as any other human.
If anything he has helped normalize freedom of religion. Again, I'm good with that.
I like Trump as a human. He knows right from wrong, has led a good life, lived by the law, worked for good not evil (you can't name a Democrat who you can say that about). |
