Public service announcement-lol:

I practise intermittent fasting and exercise to effect autophagy.

My daily routine:

I stop eating about 7 or 8, and don't eat again until 11, or later the next day. Basically 16/8.

And I swim at the YMCA most days at about 9:30 for 45 minutes, to get the exercise and put booster rockets to my autophagy.

fasting:

  • Autophagy is induced when fasting for 12-16 hours or more.
  • The process intensifies as the fasting period extends.

Calorie Restriction:

  • Reducing calorie intake by 20-50% can also trigger autophagy.

Exercise:

  • Strenuous exercise can stimulate autophagy in the muscles and other tissues.

  • What is autophagy?
The term comes from the Greek words "self" and "to eat." It is the fundamental process by which cells break down and recycle their own components.

  • Why is it important?
Autophagy is crucial for cellular survival, especially during starvation, and for removing damaged or unnecessary components. It plays a role in various cellular processes and diseases, including development, aging, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.

  • How was the discovery made?
Ohsumi used baker's yeast to identify the genes required for autophagy through a series of experiments in the 1990s. By inducing starvation and observing the accumulation of "autophagosomes" (vesicles that engulf cellular material), he identified the genes that are turned off when autophagy doesn't work.

  • What was the impact?
His work opened the door for thousands of subsequent studies into the complex machinery of autophagy and its implications for a wide range of human health conditions.
