In public health terminology, “elimination” and “eradication” have specific technical meanings defined by the World Health Organization (WHO):
  • Elimination means the interruption of transmission of a disease within a defined geographic area, for example, a country or continent, but continued vigilance and vaccination are still required because the disease can be reintroduced from elsewhere.

  • Eradication, on the other hand, means the permanent global reduction to zero of the disease-causing agent, it no longer exists in the world outside laboratories. Smallpox is the only human disease to have been eradicated.
