Way back in 1979 there was a BART car fire under the transbay tube. It was when BART had those nice comfy foam seats....the ones that later everyone hated because you never knew who had sat there and pissed themselves.

Well those foam filled seats generated a ton of toxic smoke. The firefighters lost one of their own in that fire.

I remember sitting at our kitchen table with my Dad and his friend who was a firefighter and he was telling us about the fire. I being a stupid kid said "well at least they only lost one firefighter"....looking back on that statement I've never felt more ashamed of myself. My dad's friend got rightfully upset with me. That was a significant emotional event. I'll never forget it.
