Is there an excellent Mac discussion area somewhere to chat about which models meet which needs?

Yep, right here ;). What would you like to know?

There's basically three choices right now:

Low-end: 6500
Middle: G3
High-end: 8600/9600

Thing is, the G3s are as fast or faster than the high end, and with upcoming price cuts are very competitive price-wise with the low end. So there's not much reason right now to get anything other than a G3, unless you have an unusual requirement, like needing lots of free PCI slots (would you use the Mac for video editing? If not, you probably don't).
