The key advantage here is that this new zipper is much more form fitting because you don't have a stiff tape holding it together. At the moment, it is used in new material clothing. But I can think of uses in the robotics, medical devices, and industrial areas where zipper is not currently used because the mounting or the flexibility is missing.

I am surprised that they didn't think of gluing it in place instead or sewing it.
