When I worked as a helicopter mechanic, I got to know every charter pilot in the state.

Most of them were Viet Nam vets who flew Hueys over there.

They came back here and got jobs flying Jet Rangers and Hughes 369s.

Charter flying was pretty tame for them, after Viet Nam, and most of these guys were real cowboys who could do pretty much anything the aircraft was capable of.

We'd always do a test ride with them after their annual inspections... it was a tradition that the mechanic take that first ride after the annual, as kind of a reassurance for the pilot that we were sure everything had been done correctly.

Those flights were not for revenue, and the pilots enjoyed showing us some of the wilder aspects of rotor flight.

Good times!
