But if, for any reason (including death), Musk were out of the picture, the company would be finished.

If I were driving down the road and heard it on the radio, I'll pull over and sell my stock instantly. Not even give it a second thought.

Stock ownership in Tesla is the best way I can monetize Musk. Just as it was clear there would never be innovation at Apple after Jobs died (and there hasn't been). To his credit, Jobs had picked a man who, although he could not innovate, he COULD preserve capital, which is what Apple needed at that moment.

But Tesla must have innovation for the next ten years. If it doesn't, it will fall to the same fate as every other automaker in the US has in the last 100 years, pretty much. Owning the stock is a big risk for someone my age and I have to make up for it by controlling the temptation to buy more.
