Heywood, we already HAD "third competitors." I remember it well. Just over 10 years ago, iOS and Android weren't the only games in town.

There was also Windows Phone, which I remember seeing because a bunch of Microsoft employees were carrying them around. (This was at a video game competition, which of course the Microsoft employees dominated because they were part of the Xbox team.)

I must say, those Windows Phones looked rather slick. They had a tile-based GUI with very nice animations whenever apps opened up.

Too bad for Microsoft, the Windows Phones never got any traction.

I also remember Intel trying to push for some open-standard mobile OS. I think it was called MeeGo or something. It was quite pathetic, but for some odd reason Intel resisted jumping onto the Android bandwagon. Only later did they come out with an x86 version of an Android smartphone, but by then it was way too late.
