ym might have been referring to LAC, which Trumpy and co took a stake in.

Yes, the U.S. government took a 5% stake in Lithium Americas (LAC) through the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of a restructured loan agreement to fund the Thacker Pass lithium mine. This 5% equity ownership, acquired through warrants in the company and its joint venture with General Motors, was a condition of drawing on a previously announced loan and was intended to provide a buffer and protect taxpayer investment.

  • Reason for the stake:

The stake was part of a deal to allow Lithium Americas to access the first part of a large loan. The government wanted a small equity stake to reduce its risk and act as a cash buffer, rather than purely investing for growth.

  • Structure of the stake:

The 5% equity ownership includes warrants in both Lithium Americas and its joint venture with General Motors for the Thacker Pass project.

  • Source of the funding:

The investment comes from the DOE's loan program, which had previously committed a larger loan to the company.
