I was coming out the swimming pool at the gym and went to take a shower. A 12 or 13 year old boy next to me grabbed my shampoo and dropped it on the floor and stepped on it, cracking up laughing with glee.

I had shampoo in my eyes and couldn't see well. I thought it was a little brat playing a prank on me and I got angry and got the soap out of my face. But his father quickly apologized and offered me his shampoo. I immediately realized that the boy is severely autistic and the father is just trying to have moment of normalcy with his son. My reaction changed from anger to empathy.

My kids used to volunteer in a synagogue to take care of very disabled children so that their parents could have a normal night out. They used to bring back a lot of stories.

I have no idea how people who have such children or worse live. It really can't be easy. I am just grateful that I am not one of them. And I don't think that I could do what you wife does.
