I have a few masters degrees. One of them is in machine vision and AI. It is in fact possible to teach machines how to recognize patterns and do a good job of it even when there is a fair amount of ambiguity.

For example, modern AI can now recognize your family members and pets and distinguish them from other people or pets. This is what Google images do easily. In military, they manage to do object (read target) recognition even when only parts of the object is visible. And I know of a project where a small camera array was able to reconstruct the video of two people talking behind hedges (or was it fence screen?) and remove the barrier. They wanted to sell it to DEA to video drug dealers who would hide behind a fence or something to carry their business.

So a lot can be done with pattern recognition without actually programming details. All you need is a lot of data and labeling for the machine to put it together and learn.

I will eventually do this. But not yet. My research is in neurosymbolic AI. I don't do pure black box AI that I can't understand why or how it works. I want smart AI that gets better with experience and can explain why it did what it did.

That is not easy.
