One of my favorite quotes from Marcus Aurelius is when names Roman emperors and great senators that he admired as he grew up. He goes on to say that these people shone like stars and now rarely anyone mentions their name. He concludes that if one is truly great, then he may be remembered for one or two generations, but for the most parts we are forgotten as soon as we are gone. And anyway, of what use is it to be remembered after death, he adds.

I agree with the conclusions of his self note: all that matters, is that you live a life of virtue. A life where you can look at yourself in the mirror and feel you have been a descent person. You do it for yourself not for others. Who cares what people think of us once we are gone, if they think of us at all.

BTW, I am taking a deep meditation course with Sam Harris. He had an interview with one of the Christian scholars who is also a scientist. Sam himself is an atheist.

So Sam says, you have it good. I have always said that nothing takes the sting of death and mortality out of life like truly believing that it is not the end and you are just transitioning to another phase.

And the guy replied that research shows that real atheists are no more afraid of death than real religious people. It's the so-so people on both sides of the fence that really suffer.

Go figure! There are some things in this world that really do work as they should.
