FWIW, the average salary in our top rated high school district is $170,500.

According to data from the California Department of Education, MVLA teachers on average earn the most in the state, with an average salary of more than $170,500. In June of this year, the school board approved a 4% raise for district teachers, meaning that MVLA educators now earn between $106,025 and $205,547 annually, depending on their education level and number of years in the school district.
They get to retire at 60% of terminal salary after 30 years which is age 52 for those who work straight out of university for 30 years. That pension is a HUGE cost and I BELIEVE is a huge reason teacher unions are usually one of the largest campaign contributors to higher taxes.

I blame tech VCs for putting too many companies here and driving up housing and other costs but next in line is our pension system where elected officials have always preferred more office buildings that pay taxes (to fund these generous pensions) and import their workers from other cities who get to pay to educate their workers.
