The baby here is LEGAL immigration, and the bathwater is ILLEGAL immigration.
There is a difference between desirable immigration and legal immigration.

Suppose we choose to encourage the immigration of those who have committed serious crimes into the United States to go through the citizenship process. Or we choose to allow in people who are unable to provide for themselves. Or we choose to allow in people who are known terrorists, or have a history of violet protests, or people who have sworn to destroy the United States or women who marry their brothers to get into the country? Or any of a thousand other undesirable people?

Are you okay with that? Do you feel that we should abandon any standards at all for immigration?
