When you bought a computer in late 70s to mid 80s, you did in fact buy an educational device that could provide you great delight as you learned and educated yourself.

This is because there was no real operating system and very few apps. So you turned on the computer and had to start programming it. There were books that showed you how to build programs. But there was no internet or other sources of distraction. A computer was a paper weight if you didn't want to learn how to use it.

Today even a toddler can use a computer. It is not an education device; it is a gateway drug to continuous distraction and mindlessness.
