Most apps just teach you how to do mindfulness meditation and sit still and pay attention to your breath or something like that. This is useful, but it is not really a "course" in the same way that learning how to stretch and workout is not the same thing having a coach in a gymnastics team. The stretching app is useful, but not as useful as having a coach and a team.

I am taking Sam Harris' course (via its app) "Waking Up". It combines mindfulness meditation with psychology and philosophy. The stated goal is to teach you how to use your brain and perceive better rather than just being a calmer you.

There are also lessons and interviews with philosophers and clinical psychologists on all sorts of topics ranging from dealing with chronic pain or grief and anger to procrastination. These lessons, lectures, podcasts, all have a mindfulness tilt to them and show how mindfulness makes a difference.

It's not free, but you get a month of free trial to see if its for you.

My personal experience has been very positive. And I feel a noticeable difference after few days of trying the meditations, but I repeated each lesson 3 times per day (each session is ~10 minutes). It is becoming a persona ritual to take 10 minute breaks of mindfulness throughout the day.

As Sam put it, "whatever problems you are facing will still be there after the session. Be kind to yourself and give yourself this 10 minutes of peace."

My advice, don't rush through the lessons. Make sure you are good in one stage before moving on to next.
