Once a benefit has been given to people it’s very difficult to take it away. FDR knew this and that’s why social security was not a welfare program given to a few poor people but a universal benefit given to all. The average American is not tuned into politics or political decisions. Of three friends who live in rural states only one knew there was a government shutdown and that’s because his flight was cancelled due to the government shutdown. All folks collecting social security will know it and feel it when their social security checks are cut or frozen. Reagan knew this too so his “save” for social security was all about future changes rather than current changes. Social security is only one piece, albeit a large piece, of the budgetary process. There are many options that can be explored. The can will continue to be kicked down the road until it can’t. No one can accurately predict the future. Interesting points and conclusions, but all conjecture.
