The context:
.....A friend of Hamdi’s family told Zeteo that the short clip, taken from hundreds of hours of Hamdi speaking, lacks context. “Sami is talking about celebrating the fact that, finally, people are now talking about Gazans and Palestinians, whereas, over the last decade, their concerns and their struggle and their plight had been removed from the political consciousness and from the public consciousness,” the friend said.
In another interview days after October 7, Hamdi, citing Muslim scripture, shared what he called an important message to Muslims: “We don’t celebrate bloodlust, we don’t celebrate death, and we don’t celebrate war. What Muslims are celebrating is not war, they’re celebrating the revival of a cause, the just cause that everybody thought was dead. This is an important distinction, and I think it’s very important to stress.”
DHS chose not to share this particular video on its Twitter account.
Hamdi’s father has been responding on X to the allegations against his son, saying he raised him “to respect all people, no matter their beliefs, and to always choose dialogue and kindness.” He cited a video of Hamdi years ago in which he moderated a discussion between Muslim, Jewish, and Christian leaders.
“I assure you, you have targeted the wrong man,” he wrote, adding: “Sami wants peace and dignity for all.”
