Who do you think is playing for time in Ukraine-Russia negotiations: Putin or Zelenskyy?

Elena Gold
Media analyst Oct 26

This war is on the territory of Ukraine: Russia has a ceasefire offer on the table since March 2025, and now Putin simply tries to push forward as far as he can, until Trump decides: “Enough!” Ukraine agreed on an immediate ceasefire; Putin is playing for time.

The U.S. and NATO could have put an end to the Russian invasion years ago, but they kept following the “de-escalation” strategy — and look where we are now.

For Putin, the situation isn’t any better than where he was 3 years ago in 2022. In fact, it’s worse: 3 years ago military assets on the Russian territory weren’t hit by Ukrainian drones and missiles daily. Ukraine had no missiles and large drones that they were producing themselves.

Now, Ukraine is the EU military powerhouse, with mass production of drones and cheap cruise missiles.

Things are not getting better for Putin.
In fact, Putin is again trying his bluff, claiming that Russia has tested a new nuclear-powered cruise missile "Burevestnik", which supposedly can fly around for days.

Putin bluffing about some “wunderwaffe” means he’s out of options and his only hope is to scare some overly cautious security advisers, so that Russia is allowed not to lose in Ukraine (as they should).

A year ago Putin was bluffing about another “wunderwaffe” – “Oreshnik”. He even claimed they are beginning to mass-produce them and it will be absolutely devastating.

Putin even dressed in khaki for the theatre.

Putin stopped talking about “Oreshnik“ after a few months. No one saw it ever being used successfully anywhere.

Now Putin has another non-existing “wunderwaffe.”

Putin is trying to instill irrational fear into the people who make decisions. He’s playing for time.
