I was on that ship. The day's schedule was, "Sail the Ionian Sea." Nothing but water. Around 11:30 there was an announcement, "Oscar to deck two aft."

Didn't know what that meant (thought someone hadn't reported to duty where they were supposed to, learned it later) but was in the room and suddenly the ship started acting different. Went onto our porch(?) and the ship was starting to make a turn. There was a smoke marker and an orange life preserver - donut - in the water. About then the announcement came that a crew member had gone overboard and the ship was going to search. I was like several people and stood there with field glasses for quite a while and saw nothing.

It was several hours before a plane appeared - we were a long way from land in any direction - and in the meantime the ship kept making circles. Eventually the Italian Coast Guard took over and released us. We were supposed to go to Palermo the next day but they canceled - couldn't get there - and went to Messina instead. The excursion director, Bradley, and his staff must've had some long hours but they put new tours together.

Heard a lot which was hearsay including from people who said they saw the person go overboard. From what they say "fell" was the wrong word. And from what I could see, between the smoke and life preserver they knew where the person went in. The sea was calm and it seems to me if they could swim at all they could have been found if they wanted to be. Again, hearsay, I don't believe Viking has said anything officially. As far as I know they were never found which is pretty normal for people going off cruise ships.

Say hi to Peace. I hope she is doing well.
