SERIES PREMIERES THURSDAY ON NETFLIX

Death by Lightning has a blast with a little-known presidential assassination plot

History is a subject that has everything going against it: it’s old and boring. Sorry, I’m just speaking the truth. But it doesn’t have to be, as confirmed by witnessing a sh–faced and potty-mouthed soon-to-be-vice-president Chester A. Arthur (played by Nick Offerman) puking his guts out into a dingy bathroom at a party. Death by Lightning is rare on two accounts: Netflix doesn’t make shows like this anymore — prestige historical dramas — and it makes history fun. The story follows the unusual rise of James A. Garfield (Michael Shannon) to become the president of the United States, while also following the man who went on to shoot him, Charles J. Guiteau (Matthew Macfadyen). It’s more about one man’s obsession with making a name for himself than the inner workings of politics, but you’ll get both and heaps of humor to go with it. The detailed costuming, set design, and facial hair is absolutely transportive, and the acting — particularly from Macfadyen, Shannon, Offerman, Betty Gilpin, and Shea Whigham — is stellar.
